This picture can be economically incorrect, depending on what state you are in, that one dollar could have been the tax

Re: Try to figure this out!
ill is right. Say you gave your mom the other dollar that you kept. The equation would then be 49+48=97, and you would then be wondering what happened to the 3 dollars, WHICH is why the equation is incorrect, like ill said.
Re: Try to figure this out!
yeah, they just word it to confuse and it works, aha. Just thought it was cool.

I moved it to jokes...and WHOA! WTF...I saved the pic to show friends. But can someone explain it to me BARNEY style cuz I dont understand why "the equation is wrong"
Re: Try to figure this out!
the way it was presented will make you mind fuck but i figured it out first time because the equation was wrong
Re: Try to figure this out!
Even though I'm in 8th grade, I still know a lot about math
Isn't algebra supposed to be taken in high school? Cause we started it in 7th grade...

Re: Try to figure this out!
Ill try Nox, its all in the wording
Say you split the $1 you have left and give it to mom and dad, then you owe them $48.50 each........... $48.50+$48.50= $97+ your $0=$97
Now, $49+$49= $98+your $1=$99 is TRUE, but $97(new shirt)+your $1+$1(for mom)+$1(for dad)= $100, THEREFORE, the "missing dollar" is actually now in your pocket

Re: Try to figure this out!
The part of the equation that is wrong is adding 98+your dollar.
You still owe 98 but you dont owe yourself anything. There is no reason to be adding that dollar. If your going to add something to the 98 it would be the 2 dollars you already paid back making it equal 100.

Re: Try to figure this out!
Ha reminds me of those one
3 guys go to a hotel, they split a room. The receptionist says $30 dollars so they all pay ten
Realizing it's only 25 dollars she sends the bellhop to give them five dollars back. Not being able to split 5 into 3 the bellhop gives each guy a dollar and keeps the other two.
So the bellhop has 2 dollars and each guy paid 9 so that's only 29 wheres the last dollar?

Re: Try to figure this out!
Here's the simple math to the problem.
50+50=100
100-97=3
leaving owe to mom 50 and dad 50
So all together if you were to give the 3 dollars back to parents then you would owe Mom = $49 and Dad = $48 (or vice versa)
But you give one to Mom = $50 and one to Dad = $49
And THERE IS NO MISSING DOLLAR. Its a dumb joke.
50+50=100
100-97=3

Re: Try to figure this out!
TSR u just confused me more, it clearly says you got $3 back and gave $1 to moms and $1 to pops & kept $1- now u owe them $49 each. SO 49+49=98 plus the buck you kept is $99 ... where is the other $1.
Thats why the monetary system is fraud!

Lol, you took 50 from both.
give 1 to mom giving her 50, one to dad giving him 49 or vice versa. The math in the problem is flawed completely.
Re: Try to figure this out!
WTF?!
THIS is how I understand it:
100-97 = 3
1(to mom & $49 owed) + 1(to dad & $49 owed) = 2 ($98 owed)
you kept $1 so where is the OTHER DOLLAR needed!

Re: Try to figure this out!
Ok let me try this one last time. If you dont get it then i will never believe in you...
so you start of with receiving $50 from mom and dad
$50+$50=$100
Spend 97 on object
$100-$97=$3
To split the $97 spent
$49+$48=$97
Give one to Mom and Dad
$49+$1=$50
$48+$1=$49
$50+$49=$99
You kept the remaining dollar.
The problem is presented in a way to trick the mind, which is why many of us have problems with word problems. There is no possible way where it can be $49+$49 unless you had $4 back and kept $2....
