ill is right. Say you gave your mom the other dollar that you kept. The equation would then be 49+48=97, and you would then be wondering what happened to the 3 dollars, WHICH is why the equation is incorrect, like ill said.

Isn't algebra supposed to be taken in high school? Cause we started it in 7th grade...

Ill try Nox, its all in the wording

Say you split the $1 you have left and give it to mom and dad, then you owe them $48.50 each........... $48.50+$48.50= $97+ your $0=$97

Now, $49+$49= $98+your $1=$99 is TRUE, but $97(new shirt)+your $1+$1(for mom)+$1(for dad)= $100, THEREFORE, the "missing dollar" is actually now in your pocket

The part of the equation that is wrong is adding 98+your dollar.
You still owe 98 but you dont owe yourself anything. There is no reason to be adding that dollar. If your going to add something to the 98 it would be the 2 dollars you already paid back making it equal 100.

Here's the simple math to the problem.

50+50=100
100-97=3
leaving owe to mom 50 and dad 50
So all together if you were to give the 3 dollars back to parents then you would owe Mom = $49 and Dad = $48 (or vice versa)
But you give one to Mom = $50 and one to Dad = $49
And THERE IS NO MISSING DOLLAR. Its a dumb joke.

Lol, you took 50 from both.
give 1 to mom giving her 50, one to dad giving him 49 or vice versa. The math in the problem is flawed completely.

THIS is how I understand it:

100-97 = 3

1(to mom & $49 owed) + 1(to dad & $49 owed) = 2 ($98 owed)

you kept $1 so where is the OTHER DOLLAR needed!

so you start of with receiving $50 from mom and dad
$50+$50=$100

Spend 97 on object
$100-$97=$3

To split the $97 spent
$49+$48=$97

Give one to Mom and Dad
$49+$1=$50
$48+$1=$49
$50+$49=$99

You kept the remaining dollar.

The problem is presented in a way to trick the mind, which is why many of us have problems with word problems. There is no possible way where it can be $49+$49 unless you had $4 back and kept $2....
